LANSING, Ill. (May 21, 2019) – On Monday night, May 20, the crowd in attendance at the meeting of the Park Board was about 12 times larger than usual. Friends and family of the three incoming Commissioners had gathered to show their support and watch the swearing-in ceremonies.

The crowd included Harvey Alderman Marshun Tolbert (standing, second from left), whom Smith knows through her work as Chief of Staff for State Representative Marcus Evans. Other friends and family members also filled the room to show their support. (Photo: Melanie Jongsma)

Karen Adams, Micaela Smith, and Jim Long all ran unopposed in the 2019 Park Board elections. Smith had been appointed to the Park Boardin 2017 to fill a vacancy, so this is the first time she has been elected to a full six-year term. Long was also elected to a six-year term. Adams was elected to a two-year term.

Sharon Desjardins, Senior Superintendent of Strategy and Operations, administered the oath of office while the public captured the moment in videos and photos.

The new Board’s first item of business was to accept nominations for the offices of President and Vice President of the Board. Jim Long was voted in as President, and Bob Tropp was voted in as Vice President. Superintendent Desjardins will continue to serve as Secretary for the Board.

The Lan-Oak Park Board meets monthly on the third Monday of the month. Committee of the Whole meetings begin at 6:30pm, and Board meetings are scheduled directly following. Meetings take place in the conference room at the Eisenhower Fitness Center, 2550 178th Street, Lansing, Illinois. Call 708-474-8552 for more information.
