CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. (March 31, 2019) – Respond Now, a local nonprofit that provides short-term assistance to break the cycle of poverty, will host a free Financial Fitness workshop April 9 at 5:00pm at 1439 Emerald Ave in Chicago Heights.

The workshop teaches participants practical skills, such as saving money, repairing credit, and achieving goals that require large sums of money, such as home buying.

After attending the class, attendees create a budget and have follow-up visits every three months with Housing Counselor Anna Jimenez, who also leads the class. “I try to get clients ready before making the leap into debt,” Jimenez said. “I want them to know the options available before walking into a bank.”

A soft pull on the participants’ credit, which does not affect credit score, is required in order to create realistic goals and planning.

Other habits Jimenez asks participants to develop include checking bank and credit card statements regularly, checking credit scores yearly, paying attention to the small transactions that accumulate, and utilizing free services.

The money management course is held once a month. Respond Now also hosts a home buyer education workshop twice a month. Registration is accepted up to the day before the workshop through the Response Now website.

“No one one will take care of you financially but you,” Jimenez said. “You know what you need, so why not be prepared for the challenges.”

Respond Now is a non-profit organization that enhances the quality of life in south suburban communities by working to alleviate hunger and prevent homelessness for people at risk. Find out more at www.respondnow.org or by calling 708-755-HELP.
