LANSING, Ill. (January 8, 2018) – At their December meeting, Lansing’s Planning and Zoning Board considered a request from Lansing Cleaners for a special use permit. Lansing Cleaners would like to update their existing sign with an electronic message center.
Tom Ustanik, owner of Lansing Cleaners, had provided the Board with concept drawings from Roeda Signs, comparing the existing sign with the proposed new one. Ustanik was present at the meeting along with Rod Roeda and Michael King from Roeda Signs.
The proposed new sign will be located in the same area, but shifted to the west in order to improve visibility for traffic exiting the parking lot onto Torrence Avenue. An LED message center will replace the two changeable lettered signs that are there now.
Bob Alderden from the Building Department affirmed that the new the sign meets all building code requirements, and he recommended that the special use be granted.
Questions from the Commissioners focused on whether the movement and color of the new message center would be a potential distraction for drivers. Roeda replied that the sign can be programmed for flashing and movement, and that it would be up to the owner to regulate it. Ustanik assured the Board that his messaging would be similar to what he displays now announcing services and sales.
The Planning and Zoning Board reached a unanimous decision to recommend to the Village Board the granting of a Special Use Permit for an Electronic Message Center to replace the existing sign at Lansing Cleaners, 18210 Torrence Avenue, Lansing, Illinois 60438. The recommendation will most likely be on the agenda for the January 15 Committee of the Whole meeting.
