information provided by the Forest Preserves of Cook County

BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (September 21, 2018) – Forest Preserves of Cook County, City of Blue Island, and Friends of the Cal-Sag are hosting an open Cal-Sag Trail Update on Monday, September 24, at 7:00pm at Blue Island City Hall – East Annex, 2434 Vermont Street, in Blue Island.

During the public meeting, attendees will learn about the new Cal-Sag trail segment crossing the Little Calumet River, which will connect the Cal-Sag Trail to Whistler Woods and the Major Taylor Trail.

Additionally, project sponsors and consultants are providing an update on the schedule for completion of all remaining links in the entire 26-mile Cal-Sag Trail, which will connect to an even wider trail network.

About the Cal Sag Trail

The Cal Sag Trail will be the primary east-west multi-purpose trail in the south suburbs, linking the 13-mile Centennial and 8.9-mile I&M Canal Trail in Lemont to the 5.3-mile Burnham Greenway in the Village of Burnham, which connects to the 7.9-mile Pennsy Greenway that runs into Indiana.

Additional connections from the Cal Sag Trail include the City of Palos Heights’ 7-mile trail to the Forest Preserves’ 18.8-mile Tinley Creek Trail and the 7.6-mile Major Taylor Trail.

As a green corridor, this will connect 14 communities and 450,000 people, providing the backbone for linking regional recreational trails. The Cal Sag Trail will be one of the most significant trails in the Forest Preserves’ system and in the Chicago Wilderness region. The trail will and provide opportunities for recreation, healthy lifestyles, and locally based economic development.

This 26-mile project, first envisioned in 2004, is the result of a diverse collaboration of local municipalities and nonprofits. The project is funded by the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) and Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program.
