CALUMET CITY, Ill. (November 20, 2017) – In dealing with today’s climate and in an effort to help empower young women, TF North is hosting the first 2017 District-wide Girls’ Empowerment Conference. The “In This Together…Be That Girl” conference will take place from 8:00am–1:00pm on Saturday, December 2, at TF North High School. More than 250 girls throughout the district will attend.

“In today’s current climate, we want to make sure our girls feel they are in control and can find happiness on their own merit,” said Dr. Creg E. Williams, District 215 superintendent.

The conference is the idea of co-coordinators Lauri Like and Lori Knox-Lindsay, who got the idea when they and the TF North STARS mentoring group attended the Shero Conference in Chicago, Illinois, at Rauner Prep High School. Inspired by the conference, the sponsors submitted a proposal that was greeted with a warm welcome from Dr. Dwayne Evans, TF North Principal, and Superintendent Dr. Creg E. Williams.

“Our goal is to provide teen girls within the Thornton Township boundaries a nurturing environment where they are encouraged to try new things. With this district-wide Girls’ Empowerment Conference, young women will be provided with tools to put into their toolboxes that will help them achieve their full potential despite any social or cultural barriers to their success.”

The conference has more than 25 workshops, focusing on self-esteem, leadership, dating, and branding through social media. The workshops will be presented by school staff and business community members. To kick off the event, the Opening Empowerment Ambassador is Jennifer Reid, Principal of Rauner Prep in Chicago. Reid is the founder of the J Rose Project that hosts the Annual Shero Summit. The conference provides teens with resources to better equip themselves to strive for excellence. The closing Keynote Empowerment Ambassador speaker is Caprice O’Bryant, founder of Excuse Free Fitness, who will inspire the girls to reach their full potential through adversity and determination.

“We want the girls to have a wonderful experience at the conference and feel empowered to make choices about what they need, instead of offering just an assembly-style event,” said Lori Knox-Lindsay.

TF North High School is located at 755 Pulaski Road in Calumet City, Illinois.
