Illinois Department of Human Rights celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month by ‘Saluting Excellence’

CARBONDALE, Ill. (October 3, 2018) – “Illinois diversity makes us stronger and more connected as a state,” said Janice Glenn, Director of the Illinois Department of Human Rights. “Today we celebrate those who embody the American dream and work to ensure fairness and equality for the Latino community. Each of our honorees has made it a priority to help diversity flourish in the state of Illinois. I am proud to be a part of a state that thrives on diversity and understands; with great diversity comes great strength and growth.”

The speech was part of a ceremony on the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale, Illinois, where Glenn presented a “Saluting Excellence” award to Liliana Godinez, Wayne Sirles, Tomas Daniel Cortez, Cindy Buys, Deborah Sarvela, and Phillip Bareda. The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR), in partnership with Southern Illinois University (SIU), Carbondale honored these organizations, businesses, educators, and individuals because of their deep commitment and outstanding leadership to promote fairness and equality and act as role models of the American dream.
