information provided by the Lansing Police Department

LANSING, Ill. (May 25, 2018) – On May 23, Andrea Cunningham-Ellis, of Griffith, Indiana, turned herself in to the Lansing Police Department Criminal Investigations Division for a crime that had been committed on April 2, 2018. The Lansing Police Department had responded at that time to 17766 Rosewood Drive, where a five-year-old female had been shot. LPD and the Lansing Fire Department had treated the child on the scene for her injury and transported her to Munster Community Hospital for further treatment. The child was later transported to Comer Children’s Hospital.

During an initial investigation, it was learned that there was a party at the reported location. During this party, the child’s mother was handling a gun which went off, striking the child while she slept.

Turning herself in on May 23, in the company of her attorney, Ms. Cunningham-Ellis did not speak with detectives or answer any questions. The Cook County States Attorney’s Office was contacted and came to the Lansing Police Department to review the case. Upon their review, Ms. Cunningham-Ellis was charged with one felony count of Reckless Conduct.

Ms. Cunningham-Ellis was processed accordingly and transported to the Markham Courthouse for an initial bond hearing on May 25, 2018.

The child has been released from the hospital and is recovering from her injuries.
