LANSING, Ill. (April 9, 2018) – “This is not a GED,” said Debbie Albrecht, Library Director. “This is an actual high school diploma.” The Lansing Public library is offering scholarships that will help Lansing adults earn that diploma.

Career Online High School is a program brought to public libraries by Gale, a Cengage company. Part of the world’s first accredited, private, online school district, Career Online High School is specifically designed to re-engage adults into the education system and prepare them for post-secondary career education or the workforce.

Currently, more than 10% of adults in Lansing lack a high school degree or equivalent.

“Earning a high school diploma is a life-changing achievement,” said Juan Estrada, Head Librarian of Circulation. “By offering Career Online High School, we’re empowering our residents to seek new opportunities and transform their lives.”

“We’re delighted to partner with the Lansing Public Library to offer Career Online High School and give residents access to education and the potential to change their lives,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager for Gale.

The Lansing Public Library will award scholarships for Career Online High School to qualified learners. Once enrolled, each student is paired with an Academic Coach who assists with developing an individual career plan, offers ongoing guidance and encouragement, evaluates performance, and connects the learner with the resources needed to master the course material.

Classes are supported by board-certified instructors, and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform. Coursework begins in one of eight high-growth, high-demand career fields—such as child care, education or certified transportation—before progressing to the core academic subjects. Students are given up to 18 months to complete the program, but it is possible to graduate in as few as 6 months by transferring previously earned high school credits.

Residents can learn more about Career Online High School at the Lansing Public Library, 2750 Indiana Avenue, 708-474-2447. Or email Juan Estrada, Head Librarian of Circulation at [email protected].
