Even if you’re not a pet owner, you can find reasons to shop at Ted’s. Wild bird seed, yard art, and garden art all make good Christmas gifts—and all are available here.

Shopping for teens? Check out The Bunker for military surplus clothing and equipment. Tired of shopping? Stop in at Health Foot Massage to find relief and rejuvenation. La Rosita (it’s hard to read their sign in this photo) combines the healthiness of a grocery store with the convenience of a convenience store. And a gift certificate from Sandler’s Shoes would be a thoughtful gift for someone with hard-to-fit feet.

Like many local small businesses, both Cole & Young and L&M Jewelers (shown in the background, across the street) will give you expert personal attention so you can find the perfect gift—for yourself or someone else.

End your day of local shopping at Beggars Pizza, a pizza joint that retains the character of the movie theater it used to be. Beggars also does catering, or they have party rooms available for your large family gathering.

a message from The Lansing Journal and the Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce

In addition to personal service and unique merchandise, shopping local offers other benefits. Paying local sales taxes at those local shops helps our community by generating revenue that can be directed toward road repairs, garbage pick-up, infrastructure enhancements, and a variety of services provided by our police, fire, Public Works, and other departments.

But perhaps more important is the community-building that happens between Lansing residents and Lansing business owners when sales transactions become personal interactions. Shopping local is how relationships develop, and that’s what community is all about.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving has become known as Small Business Saturday. We at The Lansing Journal and the Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce are encouraging your participation.

Shoppers: Will you visit at least one Lansing business on Saturday and spend a little money there? Bring your out-of-town guests with you!

Businesses: Will you join the Lansing Area Chamber of Commerce? Doing so not only gives you access to their resources and services, it also adds vibrancy to the network of businesses who are building community here in Lansing.
